When you decide to pursue chemotherapy as a course of action it is important to understand the side effects that come with it. Here are a few things you can expect:
- Vomiting
- Withhold food and water for 12 hours, and then offer small amounts of water. If you pet does not vomit after drinking the water, offer small amounts of bland foods such as boiled chicken or boiled hamburger with white rice. If still no vomiting, gradually reintroduce the pet’s normal diet in about three days.
- Diarrhea
- Give your pet bland, easily digestible foods. If your pet is not vomiting, fresh water should always be available.
- Low White Blood Cell Count
- The white blood cell count is expected to drop below normal after treatment, but should return to normal by the next treatment date. This should not cause a problem unless it drops too low. If this happens the body will have a difficult time fighting off infection and should be monitored closely.
- Bladder Irritation
- Certain anti-cancer drugs can cause irritation in the bladder. The irritation can cause the urine to bloody and may appear to be uncomfortable for your pet. If this happens your pet can be treated with antibiotics and anti-inflammatories.
